The definition of unfortunate

I’m a good sport. But getting hoodwinked out of a day off twice in one year is a bummer.

I got a wake up call this morning at 5:53 a.m. My friend at school was calling to let me know that we were having another snow day. This was good news minus the fact that it took 3 hours to do a 1.5 hour drive last night to get to Jefferson City, Mo., where I’m going to be in training for two days. So while everyone is lounging around in sweatpants today, I’m going to be learning the techniques of grading a standardized test.

This past fall, during our heat wave, I was attending a full day training on emergency search and rescue while everyone was relaxing over margaritas after an early dismissal.

And as if to rub it in, another staff member called me at 5:57 a.m. All I can say is that we have an effective system for getting the word out to staff. I text messaged my friend at another school. She had no idea. At least I could help brighten her day.

Just for the record: I’m excited to be doing this training. I’m just (I think understandably) bitter that I am losing out on a paid day off.

  1. Missing out on paid off days is the worst. Being that I’m hourly these days, my choice is work or be poor, and i have come to greatly appreciate the greatness of vacation, etc.

  2. Ouch. I was doing a (mandatory) observation at another high school in my district the day that the power went in my school out and everyone got sent home early. The power was just fine at the school I was visiting, so I had to finish my observation and attend several hours of professional development on top of it.

This was about a year and a half ago and I’m still slightly bitter. ;)
