Closing the Teach For America Blogging Gap
Mar 04 2008

A week without teaching

Even though it was 70 degrees and sunny on Sunday, it is snowing like the dead of winter in St. Louis today. In fact, this is our biggest storm of the year. More than 8.5 inches has already blanketed the airport, the place of our official readings. Eating Ted Drewes while wearing short sleeves seems so long ago as I look out my window on a world of white.

The occurrence of this snow day means that, this week, I will not have been in my classroom for even one lesson. This is strange, but true.

First, so that I can stop avoiding writing for the sake of feeling I might disclose my identity… I’m realizing that this blog is far from anonymous. Those that know me well know I write on this blog. This makes sense. The problem is that a lot of people know that I write this blog. As such, I admit that I temper my words when I write so as to not suffer the wrath of the blog police who work for both Teach For America and St. Louis Public Schools.

  • Monday: a double-dose of testing our students in preparation for a field trip on Tuesday.
  • Tuesday: snow day (yay). My only complaint is that SLPS refused to call off school until 5:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday: Going to training in Jefferson City, Mo., at the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. I’m going to be a lead grader for the 8th grade state-wide science test this year.
  • Thursday: see above
  • Friday: professional development day without students

I know this post is lacking in literary flair. Hopefully now that I’ve acknowledge my un-anonymousness I’ll be more likely to write more often. The problem is that some of the things I really want to write about are top secret. If you called me, then I could tell you about what’s going down.

I feel the same way, dude. I figure I’ll let it all hang out when I’m done with the corps.
